The everyday stuff. A laptop that will not turn on, a computer that has become unusably slow, a printer nobody can talk to, a file that has vanished, software that refuses to install. I fix these for individuals, families, mosques and small businesses around Preston.
Repairs and troubleshooting
- Computers and laptops that will not start, crash, or overheat
- Machines that have slowed to a crawl — usually fixable, rarely needs replacing
- Virus and malware removal, and stopping it happening again
- Hardware upgrades — more memory, an SSD, a new battery. An old laptop with an SSD often feels new
- Screens, keyboards and charging ports
- Recovering files off a machine that will not boot
Setup and software
- New computer set up properly and your old one moved across — files, email, printers, the lot
- Windows installs and reinstalls
- Software installation and licensing, including Microsoft 365
- Email set up on all your devices so it actually stays in sync
- Backups that run on their own, so the next disaster is an inconvenience rather than a catastrophe
- Parental controls and safer browsing for family machines
Servers and business IT
I run a fleet of Linux servers hosting live sites and applications for real organisations, and I look after them day to day. If you need something set up properly rather than cobbled together, this is the same work.
- Server setup — Linux servers, web servers, databases, TLS certificates that renew themselves
- Hosting and domains — moved, configured, and pointed at the right place
- Site migrations — moving a live site to a new host without visitors noticing
- Business email that arrives instead of landing in spam
- File sharing and remote access for staff working from home
- Backups and monitoring — so you find out something is wrong before your customers do
- Ongoing maintenance — updates, certificates and security handled
How I work
I will tell you if something is not worth fixing. A five-year-old laptop that needs a new screen and a battery is often worth repairing; one that needs a motherboard usually is not, and I would rather say so than take the money.
Plain English throughout. You will get told what was wrong and what I did about it, in words that mean something.
Talk it through first
Tell me what you are trying to do and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person for it, roughly what it involves, and what it is likely to cost. No obligation, and no jargon unless you want it.
