Smart home kit is usually sold as an app per gadget — one for the bulbs, another for the thermostat, a third for the doorbell, none of which talk to each other, and all of which stop working the day the manufacturer loses interest.
I build it the other way round: one system that runs in your house, that you own, where everything works together and keeps working if the internet drops.
What that looks like
- Heating that follows the household rather than a rigid timer — warm when you are up, off when the house is empty
- Lighting that responds to time of day, motion or simply being asked
- Cameras and doorbells recording to storage in your own house, not somebody else’s cloud
- Sensors for doors, motion, temperature, damp and water leaks
- One app for all of it, plus voice control if you want it
- Routines — a bedtime that turns things off, a morning that turns them on, an away mode that handles the lot
- Energy monitoring, so you can see what is actually costing you
For Muslim households I can tie the same automations to prayer times — the same engine I use in mosques works perfectly well in a house.
Networks and Wi-Fi
Most “the internet is slow” complaints are really Wi-Fi complaints, and no amount of paying for a faster line fixes a signal that does not reach the back bedroom.
- Wi-Fi that actually covers the whole house, including upstairs and the garden
- Wired connections where they matter — the TV, the office, the games console
- A separate guest network, so visitors are not on the same network as your files
- Network-wide ad and tracker blocking — blocks ads on every device, including the ones you cannot install an ad blocker on
- Secure remote access to your home network from anywhere, without leaving the front door open
Home servers and private cloud
If you would rather your files were not on somebody else’s servers, they do not have to be.
I built exactly this for my own family: two second-hand office PCs turned into a small private cloud running four full Windows desktops, so each of my siblings has their own machine reachable from a cheap laptop, an iPad or a phone. A shared family file store, a kiosk screen, ad blocking for every device in the house, and secure access from anywhere. The software cost nothing.
The same approach scales down to a single machine for photos and documents, or up to something a small business can run on.
Built to outlast the fashion
